FREE PRISONER IN ALGERIA
756 This piece of music was composed for the documentary *Knight of Nature Born from Captivity: Don Quixote*, produced by İris Anka and directed by Mehmet Gün. The work serves to depict the period of captivity experienced by Cervantes in the Ottoman province of Algiers, following his capture at the Battle of Lepanto. It illustrates how, rather than being confined like a typical prisoner, he was granted the opportunity to lead a daily life akin to that of a free person—a situation that brought about a positive shift in the emotions of a man otherwise gripped by despair. In this sense, the piece—which evokes a generally cheerful atmosphere through the use of traditional Algerian musical elements—culminates in a final section that emphasizes a sense of action, excitement, and mystery, reflecting Cervantes’ several unsuccessful attempts to escape from Algiers.
